Lugalo golfer wins Breakfast Group Memorial Golf title

Dar es Salaam. Lugalo Golf Club player Onesphoy Mhalikwe emerged the winner of the inaugural Breakfast Group Memorial Golf Tournament held on Sunday at the Lugalo Golf Course in Dar es Salaam.

Mhalikwe recorded 72 net strokes in the event organized to commemorate the late Ali Mufuruki’s and Prof Mohabe Nyirabu’s contribution to the development of the game.

Mhalikwe, who played in division A, was followed by Peter Fiwa who recorded 73 nett strokes in the event sponsored by NCBA Bank as the main sponsor and Pepsi.

Speaking after the event, Mhalikwe said the competition was very tough and commended the organisers for the thrilling tourney.

“There were over 60 golfers who were also targeting the same prize. I am very happy to win the title and I thank the organizers and sponsors of the event,” said Mhalikwe who was awarded trophy.

In division B, M. Mkumba won with 71 nett and was followed by Laurent Sangawe who recorded 73 nett. In division C, the winner was A. Milinga with 72 nett and was followed by Boniface Japhet who recorded 73 nett.

In senior, Dr Edmund Mndolwa won the trophy with 69 nett and was followed by Ambassador Joseph Tairo who recorded 80 nett. Also, the event saw Vicky Elias winning a trophy in the nearest to the pin category while in men the winner was Steven Chiwalo.

In the longest drive, Joyce Odira won in women and John Hiza won for men. In silver category, Amina Hamisi won the trophy with 69 nett while Vicky Elias was placed second with 74 nett.

In junior, Sabrina Juma won for girls with 80 nett and Bilal Bozi won for boys. Speaking after the event, NCBA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Claver Serumaga said, "Ali and Prof Nyirabu touched the lives of countless individuals through their leadership, mentorship, and dedication to excellence.”

Serumaga said their legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of all those they inspired and it is a testament to their influence that so many people have come together to honour their memory through the tournament.

Tanzania Golf Union chairman Gilman Kasiga said, "Golf was just one aspect of Ali Mufuruki and Prof Nyirabu's brilliance. They brought challenging perspectives to our group, keeping us level-headed and pushing us to improve."

Kasiga explained that their guidance and mentorship were invaluable, and their absence is deeply felt.
