Dar es Salaam. Investigation into a a drug trafficking case facing a US national, Lione Rayford, who resides in the Michigan State, is still incomplete. The prosecution told the Kisutu Resident’s Magistrate’s Court today (July 20).

State attorney Erick Shija told the court before the Resident Magistrate-in-Charge Wanjah Hamza when the case came up for mention.

"This case has come up for mention but its investigation has not been completed," Shija told the court.

After Shija’s explanation, the magistrate adjourned the case to August 1, this year, when it will again come up for mention.

In the case, the accused is charged of trafficking narcotics contrary to section no.15 (1) (a) of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau Act 2017.

Shija alleged in court that the accused committed the offence on July 4, 2018 at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA), where he was found trafficking heroin drugs weighing 2.188 grams.

The accused was not required to enter any plea because the court had no authority of hearing cases of drug trafficking until the High Court or the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had given a permit to the court to continue hearing the case.

The accused was remanded since the charge facing him were unbailable. Rayford was for the first time taken to Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in July 10, 2018 and the charge read to him.
