Sh1bn water project now handed over to district

Dar es Salaam. Human Development Innovation Fund (HDIF) has handed over a Sh1 billion Prepaid Water project to the Kishapu District Commissioner to be implemented by Investing in Children and their Societies (ICS).

The “Innovative Prepaid Solutions for Sustainable Water Services” project was implemented by ICS to address the challenge of water shortage and increasing the revenues for water in Maganzo and Masagala village of Kishapu District in Shinyanga Region.
The prepaid water project which is funded by the UKAid through HDIF has proved to be an appropriate and efficient solution, providing water to a large number of residents in urban low-income areas.
“Using the fund that we received from HDIF, we managed to put up a water scheme for pipeline network (11.7km), provision of pre-paid water meters, construction of two storage water tanks with a combined capacity of 215,000 litress and 25 water kiosks [water ATMs] installed with pre-paid meters and solar power systems”, said ICS representative Peter Matyoko.
The community of Maganzo town and Masagala village depended on buying water from water vendors who got it from Mwadui Mines about 3km from Maganzo and sold a bucket of 20litres at Sh500.
The village chairman, Mr Charles Manyene, described the situation before the project as “extremely bad”. Households either fetch dirty water from a distance or buy it from vendors.
