Dodoma. Two MPs have asked the government to submit a bill to amend the Cybercrime Act which they said was affecting users of electronic communications.

In his question on Monday, Mr Saed Kubenea (Ubungo – Chadema) asked when the government would bring the bill to amend the law which he said had restricted access to information.

"The law also causes unnecessary conflicts with international human rights organizations and even development partners," he said.

However, the government said the law had reduced cyber crimes.

The deputy minister for Works, Transport and Communications, Mr Elias Kwandikwa, said the law had enabled safe operations of e-government, e-commerce and electronic learning.

"Considering the fact that cyber crimes have been reduced by 48.9 per cent, the government has no plans of amending the law," said Mr Kwandikwa.

Mr Joseph Mbilinyi (Mbeya Urban -- Chadema) asked a supplementary question that all repressive laws be repealed because they were undemocratic.

"I was also jailed for discussing issues affecting people and that is the outcome of bad laws," said Mr Mbilinyi who appeared for the first time in the House since he was released from jail recently.
