Dar es Salaam. Tanzania still has room for more investors in the sugar industry as currently local production does not yet meet country’s demand.

This was said by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on Thursday, August 16, at his Dodoma office when he received the ambassador of Mauritius to Tanzania, Mr Jean Pierre Jhumun, whose office is based in Maputo, Mozambique.

“Last year, I visited Mauritius and invited investors to come and invest in sugar production here in Tanzania. There is a huge potential for prospective investors,” said the Premier.

At the same time, Mr Majaliwa assured the visiting ambassador that there was also room in the fishery sector, where investors can put their money to develop it.

“As you all know, Tanzania has been well endowed with the ocean, big natural lakes and rivers, investors are welcome in this area as well,” said the prime minister.

For his part, Mr Jhumun said his country’s investors were interested in engaging in sugar production as well as fisheries in Tanzania.

He also noted that in his entourage he was accompanied by the chairman of the Sugar Investment Fund, Mr Gansam Boodram, representing members of the business community from his country.

“We’ve responded to President Dr John Magufuli’s call for us to attract investors to Tanzania,” said the ambassador.

For his part, Boodram said already they had visited some areas that they think have potential for investment and that they have already conducted studies in soil and marketing ideal.

He pointed out the areas that they visited as including Kasulu and Kibondo districts of Kigoma Region and Rufiji in Coastal Region.
