Chadema youth wing urges Magufuli to revive probe into killing of Akwillina

Chadema Youth Council (Bavicha) National Chairman Patrick Ole Sosopi speaks to the press on Wednesday 25 July, 2018 in Dar es Salaam. Bavicha wants the president and civil society groups to intervene on the statement made by police on 24 July,  2018 concerning  the release of officers who were being investigated on the death of Akwilina, a student who was shot-death in February this year.

What you need to know:

The 22-year old Akwilina died on February 16, 2018 after she was hit by a stray bullet as police were breaking up a rally by opposition party, Chadema in Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam.

Dar es Salaam. Chadema Youth Council (Bavicha) has urged President John Magufuli and civic society organisations to intervene and push the police to rethink about their decision to stop investigations into the killing of a National Institute of Transport (NIT) student Akwilina Akwilini.

Yesterday, Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police  Commander  Lazaro Mambosasa revealed that six policemen, who had been arrested as suspects following the incident have been set free.

The 22-year old Akwilina died on February 16, 2018 after she was hit by a stray bullet as police were breaking up a rally by opposition party, Chadema in Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam.

President Magufuli immediately ordered security organs to investigate and take action against the killers.

However, in an interesting turn of events, Mr Mambosasa said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that all the arrested police officers had been set free.

He said the police force was unable to get evidence that would hold their arrested colleagues responsible for the killing.

Speaking in a press conference on Wednesday, July 25, Chadema youth wing chairman Patrick Sosopi asked the President to intervene.

"We are asking the President to form a judicial commission to investigate the incident,” said Mr Sosopi.
