SportPesa and Everton win at the Sports Industry Awards

Dar es Salaam. SportsPesa and Everton Football Club have been rewarded for their partnership at the Sports Industry Awards, in the Best African Sponsorship and Pan-Africa Campaign of the Year categories.

The sponsorship, which kicked off with Everton travelling to Dar es Salaam in July last year to play against SportPesa Super Cup winners GorMahia from Kenya, has been celebrated for bringing English Premier League football to East Africa for the first time.

It was the success of this captivatingeeventvisit, referred to as  “Everton in Tanzania”, that roused interest from the industry, resulting in the two awards which was announced at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on Friday.

“Everton has a proud history of African players and a special connection to the continent, so this is not only a proud day for the club but also a demonstration of what the power of Everton can do for commercial partners in the region.

Our two organisations have worked hand-in-hand to bring our partnership to life over the last twelve months and our activation work in Tanzania last season saw us break new ground together as the first England Premier League team to play in East Africa, an event which captivated the whole of the region,” he said.

He said to deliver what we have within the first 12 months of our partnership is a fantastic achievement, the firm has much focused on looking forward to ensuring this partnership continues to go from strength to strength.

SportPesa, a global online sports betting brand that originated in East Africa, is now active in Kenya, Tanzania, the UK, Italy and South Africa.

Everton’s fixture against inaugural SportPesa Super Cup winner GorMahia FC was hosted at the National Stadium in Tanzania in front of a sold-out stadium of 35,000 people.

The game made East African history by being the first of its nature in Dar es Salaam.

SportPesa Premier League -Kenya champions GorMahia will travel to England in November 2018 to play Everton on their home soil after retaining the title of SportPesa Super Cup winners for the second successive season in another historic fixture with the club being the first East African club side to play in the UK.

Everton in Tanzania was hosted at the Tanzanian National Stadium, which was filled to capacity, the event making East African history by being the first of its nature in Dar es Salaam. SportPesa and Everton are expected to make an announcement regarding the 2018 Super Cup shortly.
