Commuter bus owners should form companies within two months otherwise they will be banned from operating in Dar es Salaam, the Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (Sumatra) warns. "Only operators who team up to form companies will be licensed and the rest will be banned,” Sumatra director-general Israel Sekirasa told a one-day workshop in Dar es Salaam yesterday. He said the plan had many advantages including improving city transport and enabling bus companies to acquire bank loans easily. Bus owners, government and Sumatra consumer consultative council officials took part in the workshop. The operators urged Sumatra to give them more time to establish the companies. They pleaded with the government not to hire foreign transporters for fear of weeding out local bus operators. They also complained about an influx of illegal operators who account for 10 per cent of the business. |
