President Jakaya Kikwete will today grace a regional conference on East African railways in Dar es Salaam.

The two-day conference organised by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development brings together representatives from East African Community members, development partners, private investors and other stakeholders in the railway business. They will discuss on how to revitalise the railways for enhanced regional integration and economic growth.

The ministry’s permanent secretary, Mr Omari Chambo, told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the conference will be co-sponsored by the World Bank (WB) and African Development Bank (ADB).

Its theme is “Revitalising the Railways for Enhanced Regional Integration and Economic Growth.” It is being held in response to the EAC heads of states’ directive to the EAC secretariat to develop a regional strategy for the railway system’s development.

In implementing this directive, Mr Chambo said, the EAC secretariat commissioned a consultant (CPCS Transcom of Canada) to prepare the East African Railways Master Plan, which has already been presented to it.

“The conference is conducted in line with the inspiration of the East African Community agenda of building efficient and cheap transportation systems which are critical to the economic and social development of the EAC,” he said.

Among other things, the conference will discuss development plans for East African Railways and lessons learned from railway concessions in Sub-Saharan Africa.

It will also look at private sector challenges on operations, opportunities and lessons learned from the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.

In addition, delegates will discuss on how to improve the railway master plan and pave the way towards the implementation of strategic plans.
