The local media has in recent years been carrying reports of suspects dying in police custody with unsettling frequency, and this should be cause for grave concern. It’s worth noting that less than a year has passed since a suspect died in mysterious circumstances in police custody in Ukonga, Dar es Salaam. Is it a mere coincidence that suspects suddenly die of natural causes once they are taken into police custody? We hate to believe that there was foul play in the two Dar es Salaam incidents and other similar occurrences elsewhere in the country, although the deceased’s relatives and not an insignificant number of Tanzanians hold this view. Such incidents only serve to further lower public’s opinion of police, and this does nothing to help the custodians of the law in their endeavour to fight crime and protect law-abiding people and their property. It’s time the handling and treatment of suspects by police were thoroughly investigated with a view to establishing the truth and ensuring that police act within the confines of the law when arresting and holding suspects prior to their appearance in court. This is what is expected of the police in any country where the rule of law exists. |
