Bid to oust teachers' leader fails
By Habel Chidawali, Dodoma

Plans to oust Tanzania Teachers Union (TTU) president, Mr Gratian Mukoba, have flopped.

A meeting called here recently to strategies on the ousting on Mr Mukoba, turned out to be a reconciliation gathering between forces for and against the president.

Of late, there have been misunderstandings between top TTU leaders that led to issuance of contradicting directives on teachers issues.

A recent example is the planned strike by teachers which was supported by Mr Mukoba, while some of TTU leaders agreed with the Government to call off the strike.

To Mr Mukoba's dismay, no teacher participated in the strike to demand payment of their salary arrears and other payments.

Mr Mukoba told reporters on Wednesday night that an emergence workers council was convened to reconcile senior TTU leaders.

Reports from the meeting said Mr Mukoba was served by members from western and lake zone regions of Tabora, Mwanza, Kagera, Mara and Kigoma, who stood firm to behind him.

Those who wanted Mr Mukoba out of the union, alleged that their president had acted contrary to TTU principles by making some decisions and public announcements without consulting other national leaders.

They further claimed that Mr Mukoba had sidelined other leaders in deciding on important issues like the recent strike which was called off.

The meeting came only few days after the minister for Education and Culture, Prof Jumanne Maghembe, was quoted as saying that Mr Mukoba was leading the union politically.
