By Clement Sanga The Citizen Correspondent Iringa. More than 56 women leaders from the grassroots have undergone training on good governance, sustainable economy and accountability. The women include leaders from streets and chairpersons of Iringa Region villages. They underwent the training to enhance their participation in decision-making processes. This was said by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Iringa Region, Ms Rita Kabati (Special Seats-CCM), when opening a three-day workshop here.
It was funded by the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSS) of Germany in partnership with the Centre for Good Governance and Economic development (CGG&ED).In her speech she said that it was high time for women in the country were given more capacity-building training on various matters. The aim is to reduce their dependence on men in making crucial decisions at various levels of leadership in their areas.
Ms Kabati said there was a misconception among the public which tends to sideline women in social-economic activities. In this way they become victims of social problems triggered by the void of good governance and accountability, she said.
“It’s very important to value and involve as many women as possible in leadership in order to tap their potentials and contribute to national efforts for social-economic development,” she said. In response, the CGG&ED administrator, Ms Ruckie Madongo, said since the organisation started the training a total of 489 women in the country had been involved.
“As an organization, since May 2010 we have been conducting workshops like this in several regions such as Coast, Tanga, Morogoro, Mtwara, Lindi, Dar and today we are in Iringa… “Personally I am very impressed by the turnout as compared to other regions,” Ms Madongo noted.
She admitted that women in Tanzania were still facing numerous challenges in leadership matters. She therefore urged the government, in collaboration with development and human rights stakeholders, to step up the fight against gender discrimination.
