The Citizen ReportersDar es Salaam. Tanzania has condemned Thursday’s killing of former Libyan strongman Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and cautioned that the north African country’s reconstruction process could be undermined by civil war.Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation minister Bernard Membe said yesterday Tanzania was “shocked and saddened’ by the brutal manner in which Col Gaddafi met his death. “He did not have to die, for his pursuers seized him alive.” According to the minister, those who boast of being pioneers of human rights and justice should have arrested him and allow him to be tried in court instead of killing him point blank. “Although he is dead, our stance remains the same – that the fighting in Libya was wrong in the first place, and that it is going to be a big challenge to bring that country together,” said Mr Membe during the launch of his ministry’s celebrations to mark 50 years of independence at Mnazi Mmoja grounds in Dar es Salaam. He added that the killing of the Libyan leader might trigger an endless war since there are many people in that country who have lost their beloved ones and could be keen on revenge. “It is not automatic that Libya will be peaceful with Gaddafi’s death,” he said earlier in an interview with state television, TBC1. The minister noted that experience shows that an undemocratic regime leads to insecurity. He said for peace to prevail in Libya there is a need for NTC to foster reconciliation and unite all the Libyan people in an all inclusive government in line with the AU Road Map on Libya” the minister noted. Meanwhile a cross-section of other people interviewed yesterday gave mixed views, with a majority condemning the way the Libyan matter was handled. Some, however, felt Gaddafi’s demise should act as a lesson to other leaders across the world that the desire of the majority was more powerful than any individual.Dr Azaveli Lwaitama of the University of Dar es Salaam expressed his disappointment and said the killing was meant to hide the hypocrisy of the West. He, however, noted: “Gaddafi was a brutal fascist dictator who mixed elements of Islamic religious fanaticism with Arabic nationalism who put up a pretence of being Pan Africanist.” Dr Benson Bana, a political scientist from the same university, and NCCR Mageuzi secretary general Mr Sam Ruhuza and the St Augustine University senior lecturer, Prof Mwesiga Baregu, warned that Gaddafi’s killing won’t end Libya’s troubles and would actually ignite further worse crises. “Libya is a tribal country and you can be sure the big tribes from Misrata, Benghazi, Sirte and Tripoli will be fighting for their shares in the new government,” said Dr Bana. He also pointed an accusing finger to the Nato forces, which he accused of violating the UN Security Council resolution number 193. “Under the resolution, Nato was supposed to impose the non-flying zone in Libya and protect the Libyans but what they did was quite different…they were not sent there to kill Gaddafi but they have done it – this is a challenge to the international community,” he said. Mr Ruhuza echoed Dr Bana’s sentiments, accusing the African Union of not acting while a member state was being attacked. Mr Ruhuza said although AU could not oppose Nato actions physically it should have at least protested by walking out of the UN. “Now that it has already happened, I don’t expect any miracle from AU because it is weak, but at least they should condemn in strong terms the extra-judicial killing of Gaddafi by Nato,” he said. He added that what the Nato forces have done to Gaddafi was an act of terrorism. For his part, Dr Elisante Gabriel from Mzumbe University said although Gaddafi was rejected by the Libyans and the international community, he was still a human being and didn’t deserve the brutal killing.
