The Citizen Bureau Chief Arusha. Land issue will dominate the agenda for the opposition Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) agendas during the campaigns for the Arumeru East by-election, which is scheduled for April 1, this year. One of the candidates for the parliamentary seat, Mr Joshua Nassari, said on Monday that land ownership was a major concern of the people in the constituency, one of the densely populated areas in Arusha Region. He made the remarks at the opposition party offices in Usa River when he collected nomination forms for the by-election. The seat fell vacant following the death of Jeremiah Sumari, a CCM legislator, last month. Mr Nassari said it was pity the authorities in the area have remained quiet on land problems facing many peasants in the district, noting that large chunks of land was in the hands of a few people. He said he was opposed to the government plans to relocate thousands of landless people in the constituency to Kilindi District in Tanga Region and suggested that large estates in Arumeru which have been lying idle should be sub-divided and handed over to those in need of land. He cited Madira, Dolly, Kurumu and Gomba as among the estates, which should be sub-divided and allocated to the landless people. In the past they were owned by white settlers but their current ownership is not clear. "These farms were supposed to have been divided among our people long time ago but I don't know what has delayed the process up to now," he queried. |
