The Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (Dawasa) is planning to construct a water dam in Morogoro Region to serve as a backup for the city’s water needs.

Dawasa technical director Boniface Kasiga told reporters on Tuesday that the dam, to be built near Ruvu River, would be tapping water during the rain season for use during the dry season.

Mr Kasiga said Dawasa would need a total of $85 million (about Sh105 billion) for the project which will kick off next year.

In another development, Mr Kasiga told reporters that the water shortage facing Dar es Salaam would be eased by 2013 after completion of two projects that would generate 350,000 litres of water daily.

The projects which are jointly implemented by Dawasa and the  Dar es Salaam Water and Sewage Company (Dawasco) involve the drilling of deep wells at Kimbiji and Mpera on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam.

He said the projects would cost Sh80 billion upon completion. He added that they have already acquired the money from the World Bank and other donors.

According to Mr Kasiga, a survey conducted by Dawasa established the presence of enough amounts of underground water at Kimbiji and Mpera. He said the first dam funded by Norwegian government would be ready in April.

Currently Dar es Salaam residents consume 45,000 litres of water each day while the authority can only produce 260,000 litres daily, he said.

“Dar is experiencing a water shortage to the tune of more than 36 per cent, but I can guarantee that after completion of the projects we would fill that gap,” he said.

In another development, more than Sh143.1 million has been set aside to construct a modern sewage drainage system in Dar es Salaam.

Dawasco chief operations officer Jackson Kusala told reporters that the funds would be used to connect those people who were not connected to the city sewage drainage system and to clean sewage.
