By George Sembony, Tanga

Hundreds of Tanga residents flocked the Resident Magistrate’s Court here yesterday to see the six heroine trafficking suspects appear in court, but went home disappointed after police failed to produce the suspects.

The six suspects, including an Iranian national, were arrested at Kabuku, Handeni District early this week for allegedly illegal possession of 95 kilogrammes of heroine with street value of over Sh25 billion.

Court sources said the process of drawing charges against the six suspects, was incomplete.

When asked to comment on the situation, Tanga regional police Commander Liberatus Sabas, said legal experts from the state attorney’s office failed to complete the drawing of the charges. They case may be brought to court on Monday.

Commander Sabas added that advocates for the six suspects would also be asked to be involved in the process of drawing the charges.

The suspects are Mohammed Ally Pouradad, 30, an Iranian national; Kileo Bakari Kileo, 34, resident of Mikocheni, Dar es Salaam; Bakari Kileo Mambo, 75, of Street no. 21 in Tanga City; Yahaya ZumoMakame, 30, resident of Tanga; Salum Mohamed Makarani, 35, of Mbagala, Dar es Salaam and Saidi Ibrahim Hamisi, 33, resident of Mikanjuni, Tanga.

The suspects were arrested on Monday in an operation led by the head of police Anti
Narcotics Unit, assistant commissioner of police Godfrey Nnzowa.

A resident of Chumbageni, Mohamed Hassan, failed to hide his disappointment by saying, “we came to see the drug suspects, but for unknown reason we could not see them.”

The arrest of the Iranian national and his five accomplices, is seen as a crucial breakthrough by the anti-narcotics police who have struggled to fight drug cartels.

The haul is one of the largest to be intercepted in the country increasingly becoming a narcotics conduit to Asia, Europe and the Americas.
