Four policemen have been arrested over the death in suspicious circumstances of a taxi driver, who was in their custody in Dar es Salaam. Special Police Zone Commander Suleiman Kova told a press conference at the central police station yesterday that the four were being held for questioning following 27-year-old Musa Juma’s death. Mr Kova said the officers had been arrested so that an impartial and transparent investigation could be carried out. Mr Juma died on Wednesday, a few hours after officers from Chang’ombe police station, who were investigating his taxi’s alleged link to a past robbery, arrested him. His death led to a tussle between his family and the police, with each group giving contradictory accounts on what might have led to the death. The dead man’s relatives have accused the police of killing him and trying to cover up the crime. Family spokesperson Mwinjuma Mzee told The Citizen yesterday that they have declined to collect the body from Temeke hospital for burial until their own doctor conducts an independent postmortem examination. He said it was sad that police had claimed the man died of natural causes after denying his family access to him following his arrest over a crime they claimed he never committed. They have also engaged a lawyer as they consider filing a case against the officers. Mr Mzee said they had little faith in the police team, as they could not investigate themselves. But yesterday, Mr Kova called for patience, saying police should be allowed to carry out their duties as provided for in the law. He said the family’s doctor and lawyer would be welcome to witness the postmortem examination. |
