Mbarara.Babana farmers in Kagera Region have a new hope of finding a reliable market for their produce in Uganda.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni promised the farmers that he would help them find the market.

He made the promise on Monday when farmers from Muleba visited him at his home near Mbarara town.Mr Museveni said he was optimistic that the Bukoba banana would get market in Uganda as the country is planning to construct a banana processing industry in the near future.

“I have had your request and I promise that I will contact the authorities in Tanzania as well as those from Uganda to see how I can help,” said President Museveni.“For sure, I see a bright future as we are planning to establish a banana processing industry which would add value to your produce,” he said.

His remarks came after one of the visiting Muleba farmers told him that their produce were rotting on the way to Dar es Salaam, where there is a reliable market for banana in Tanzania. If the dream comes true, then the longtime cry from Kagera farmers of lack of a nearby reliable market for their banana would end.

Meanwhile, President Museveni has donated 100 cows to the Muleba farmers as a thanksgiving gesture to them for paying him a visit.“I will give the cows to my sister (Professor Anna Tibaijuka), who will take care of them until they arrived in Buleba. She should distribute the calf among you in your respective villages,” he said.

For her part, Prof Tibaijuka, who is the Muleba South MP, challenged the Muleba people to replicate what they have learnt in their tour in Uganda.

Prof Tibaijuka, who is also the Land, Housing and Human Settlement Development, said by emulating what Ugandans have been doing, they would increase their household income, something that would help them to overcome overdependence on government support.
