Geita district commissioner, Mr Philemon Shelutete, has asked clerics in the country to closely work with the government in the fight against crime, particularly the ongoing killings of albinos and elderly women. The district commissioner also requested religious leaders in the country to employ their spiritual role in sensitising their followers to take part in this year’s general election. Mr Shelutete urged followers of different denominations to cast their votes carefully, lest they vote for dishonest leaders during the October General Election. Mr Shelutete addressed thousands of Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church followers during the ‘Follow the Bible’ race gathering at the Kalangalala grounds in Geita. He was optimistic that crime would greatly be reduced if not eradicated should the religious leaders effectively use their platforms to condemn the same. Most of the crimes, including witchcraft-related killings of albinos and elderly persons, resulted from perpetrators distancing themselves from the tenets of their religions. The SDA Pastor, Mr Yusuf Mwalagi, earlier said the 16-kilgoramme Bible involved in the race was launched in Philippines to restore the eroded morals amongst the society members in the world. The study conducted by the church indicated that only 51 per cent of its followers read the Bible and understood it, he said, adding that the race also aimed at promoting a culture of reading the Holy Book amongst the remaining percentage of the followers. |
