Arusha.  Alarmed by worsening drought in the eastern Africa, the international community has called for concerted action to overcome the disaster.

Parliamentarians in Africa and Europe have made an earnest appeal to the international community to find a lasting solution to the debilitating famine, currently threatening lives of millions of people.Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (Eala) joined their counterparts from 30 nations, under the aegis of the Association of European Parliamentarians with Africa (AWEPA), to renew calls for additional aid and support to the affected region, Somalia in particular.

Somalia was mention as among the most affected countries on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the Polish Sejm (Parliament) and Senate, in conjunction with the AWEPA, in Warsaw, on July 26, 2011. The Parliamentarians recently convened at the Polish Parliament for a discussion themed: African Development Strategies towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Ms Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and a member of the AWEPA’s Eminent Advisory Board, had shared her grave concern about the spreading famine in Somalia, according to a statement issued yesterday by AWEPA headquarters in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

She urged MPs in Europe and Africa to step-up their role in building awareness around the issue, noting: “Somalia’s people were at the centre of a perfect storm”. She condemned the reluctance by some parts of the international community to provide help, declaring: “the rest of the world needed to take appropriate responsibility.”

The concerns raised in her letter galvanised the call for further action among AWEPA governing council members and MPs from Europe and Africa who attended the seminar. Eala was represented at the seminar by MPs Abdirahin Abdi, Augustine C. Loile Lotodo, Dan Kidega, Emerence Bucumi and Mr Kenneth Madete, Clerk of the regional Assembly.
