The government has been urged to expedite plans to upgrade to tarmac level the Musoma-Arusha Road so as to improve Mara Region’s livestock products business. The Bunda town executive director, Mr William Mabanga, a better road would, in addition to boosting livestock keepers’ incomes, reduce cattle rustling in the region. Mr Mabanga was addressing a seminar on capacity building for development stakeholders in Bunda District. The seminar was financed by Municipal International Cooperation (MIC) an organisation known with headquarters in Oslo, Norway. Mr Mabanga noted that construction of the Musoma-Arusha road would enable smooth transportation of the abundant livestock from Tanzania’s north-most regions to other parts of the country and abroad. The Musoma-Arusha road would link Mara region with Tanga region and Zanzibar. These would, in turn, serve as export points for livestock products to Sudan, Somalia, Yemen and India. Livestock products from Mara Region are mostly exported to Kenya whose market cannot absorb all of them, he observed. Mr Mabanga added that the tarmac road would also attract local and foreign investors to the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) being established in Bunda district. The MIC coordinator, Mr Alexander Mandela, urged development stakeholders in the region to take advantage of the cooperation with the institution to improve the infrastructure. This could play a big role in eradicating poverty in the country, he said. The high crime rate in Mara region is partly compounded by overpopulation of cattle. This encourages rustlers to smuggle livestock to Kenya. |
