Human Rights body calls for unity in defending rights of people living with albinism

Dar es Salaam. The Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRGG) has called for wananchi to join government’s efforts to fight for rights of people, who are living with albinism, as Tanzania joins the rest of the World to commemorate the international day of albinism awareness.
A statement released by CHRGG chairman Mr Bahame Nyanduga, the commission commended the government for efforts, which have been taken to protect people living with albinism in the country.
CHRGG condemned people, who have been involved in killings and torturing of people living with albinism in connection to witchcraft beliefs.
“We call for all Tanzanians to support the government in its efforts to fight against incidents of violation of rights of people living with albinism; we should get rid of witchcraft beliefs, which lead to killing and torturing of people, who are living with albinism,” Mr Nyanduga said in the statement.
On 18 December 2014, the United Nation General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming, with effect from 2015, 13 June as International Albinism Awareness Day.
The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution in 2013 calling for the prevention of attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism. Moreover, in response to the call from civil society organizations advocating to consider persons with albinism as a specific group with particular needs that require special attention, on 26 March 2015, the Council created the mandate of Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism.
