Tulia quashes Mbatia's question on ELCT church saga

Dodoma. Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Dr Tulia Ackson on Thursday dismissed a question by Vunjo MP, (NCCR Mageuzi) James Mbatia regarding a government’s letters to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) and the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC).

Mr Mbatia was demanding intervention from Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa about the letters that have been addressed to the two churches following their messages issued on Easter festival.

“There is a letter that has been addressed to ELTC and TEC following their message issued during Easter,” said Mr Mabatia.

Soon after completed his question, deputy speaker said the Parliament wouldn’t allow religious questions to be brought in the debating chamber.

“It should be remembered that sometime back, Mr Speaker, Job Ndugai dismissed a question by Ubungo MP (Chadema) Saed Kubenea who asked about issues related to Islamic religion. This too will not be answered,” She said

She maintained that issues concerning religious faith could not be entertained in parliament.
