Magufuli thrilled by education, health services provided by Roman Catholic Church in 150 years

President John Magufuli

What you need to know:

The government has assured religious institutions of its continued cooperation in addressing various challenges facing faithful as the Roman Catholic marks 150 years of evangelism in Tanzania Mainland.

Dar es Salaam. President John Magufuli has said the Roman Catholic Church has implemented 777 education projects in 150 years of existence in the country.

The Head of State made those remarks on Sunday, November 04, 2018 in Bagamoyo, Coast Region when addressing Tanzanians during the climax of the 150th anniversary of evangelism.

Speaking during the event, Dr Magufuli who was the guest of honour, said during that period the church established 519 healthcare centres that have been providing services to all Tanzanians.

“During this period the church has implemented education projects including 228 nursery schools, 162 primary schools, 262 secondary schools, 110 technical training institutions and four universities,” he said.

“The government is thankful to the church for evangelism during this time and projects it is implementing that serve Tanzanians regardless of their tribes, religious affiliation and geographical locations,” he added.

He commended the church for its cooperation with other religions, noting that his government will continue to cooperate with other religious denominations in developing the country.

He called on the church to preach peace, unity and solidarity as it was celebrating its 150th anniversary, noting that the move will fulfil directions left by Jesus Christ.

Regarding the challenges facing the church, he said they will collectively be addressed in order to move the country forward as a single entity.

“The government will execute its duties with great love, but, I also request your prayers. Don’t leave me, I know how this job is challenging. I get surprised how former presidents Benjamin Mkapa and Jakaya Kikwete completed their 10 years. I sometimes envy them. It is a hard job that needs prayers,” he said.

He said prayers should also be directed to believers who have been participating in various evils including corruption and rape.

He commended residents of Bagamoyo for their great love, to the extent of welcoming Christianity inspite of the fact that originally they were Muslims.

“Even the Sultan of this area was a Muslim. But, he welcomed the cross from Zanzibar to mark the beginning of the church in Tanzania Mainland without which we wouldn’t have this celebration,” he said.

The celebration was also attended by former President Benjamin Mkapa and former National Assemby Speaker Anne Makinda.
