Dar es Salaam. Local briquettes charcoal maker, Tractors Ltd, has secured a deal with an army battalion based at Lugalo Barracks of the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) whereby the latter supply the product in all the battalions in the city.

The deal, worth an unspecified amount of money, was signed in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday this week.

Tractors Ltd produces charcoal that is marketed under the brand name of Mkaa Endelevu.

The commander for Leopard Brigade of the TPDF, Brigadier General Victor Kisiri, said the move will see the army playing an increasingly important role in conserving the environment.

“We as the army have started implementing the government’s order that wanted all public institutions to start developing renewable energy sources to help protect the environment,” he said.

Presenting the 2019/20 budget for the Vice President’s Office (Environment and Union Affairs), the responsible minister, Mr January Makamba, said the government will enforce a law that will direct all public institutions that feed more than 300 people to start using renewable energy or plant their own trees. According to Brigadier General Victor Kisiri, before reaching the decision, the military was satisfied with the product and that it (the decision) was only arrived at after thorough research in its effectiveness and affordability.

Through the signed deal, he said, with 312 Service Battalion will be the one that will actually be supplying Mkaa Endelevu across the various army brigades within Dar es Salaam.

Mkaa Endelevu director Benjamin Lane said currently, the company was supplying briquettes charcoal at the University of Dodoma, Ruvu JKT and in other private companies and that the feedback was so far positive.
