Lindi. The demon of defections continues to mess up CCM, with the latest case being that of the unsuccessful parliamentary aspirant for Mtama Constituency in Lindi Region who yesterday announced he has decamped to Chadema

Mr Selemani Mathew who is popularly known as Messi, lost the hotly contested Mtama preferential poll to CCM Ideology and Publicity Secretary Nape Nnauye.

He was introduced by Chadema secretary for Lindi Region Mohamed Maadhi, who said the new member is Chadema’s candidate for Mtama Constituency, meaning he will face Mr Nnauye in the October 25 poll.

Mr Mathew defected along with 700 supporters from CCM who handed their membership cards to Maadhi.

He said, he decided to decamp because the nomination polls were not conducted in a democratic manner.

Mr Maadhi said corruption and lack of democracy within CCM that drove Mr Mathew and his colleagues away and tha was good news for the main opposition party.

“The main capital for every political party is numbers. Apart from these 700 who have come along with Mathew, we’ve received other 500 who did not belong to any party before; this is really good news,” he said.

“I thank those who advised ‘Messi’ to join Chadema. I believe he is going to win the seat,” said the Lindi regional Chadema secretary.
