Minister unhappy with Dawasa revenue collection

What you need to know:

  • Water minister Makame Mbarawa has warned underperforming Dawasa managers that their positions were on the line

Dar es Salaam. Water minister Makame Mbarawa is dissatisfied with revenue collected by Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (Dawasa) in Tabata.

He warned that he would tolerate the tendency.

Prof Mbarawa was speaking on Tuesday, December 4, during his tour of Dar es Salaam to listen to customers’ grievances.

He also inspected water infrastructure.

"This area has enough water services, but last month only Sh680 million out of targeted Sh900 million was collected. You should remember that if you collect ample revenue, it will be possible to improve infrastructure and water supply.”

He criticised Dawasa staff for collecting only 75 per cent of the revenue during the month, saying that was unacceptable.

He told the area’s manager that she risked being replaced unless she improved her performance.

He told Dawasa managers to listen to customers’ complaints and respond to them on time.

During the tour, some residents complained about receiving inflated bills.

"We want the ministry to solve the problem," said Lucus Kunambi, a resident at Tabata-Mandela

According to Dawasa Tabata manager Victoria Masele, 90 per cent of the area gets water, which flows day and night.

"In past two weeks we faced a challenge of rationing water due a problem at Upper Ruvu, but the situation has returned to normal," she said.
