US embassy says travel advisory on Tanzania normal
What you need to know:
- Official clarifies that travel advisory was not a warning against Tanzania but a regular standard message issued about many other countries
Dar es Salaam. The US embassy in Tanzania has clarified that it did not issue a travel warning for its citizens wishing to visit Tanzania as earlier reported in the media.
An official at the embassy in Dar es Salaam said the media had misreported the advisory, saying it was incorrect to say US had issued a travel warning against Tanzania.
“In fact we issued a standard travel advisory which is issued for all countries on a regular basis. It is not a special issuance,” said the official.
According to the embassy, the new advisory was similar in language to the old one issued last year for the country on items such crime, terrorism, and safety for LGBT persons.
“The advisory level has also not changed (from level 2) and is the same as the level we give to Germany (for example),” said the official, in a brief note to explain the correct position of the advisory.
In the story published on Thursday on The Citizen website, it was reported that the US had issued a "travel warning" against Tanzania, which has now been found to have been misunderstood and taken out of context.
As a responsible news website, The Citizen has since pulled down the incorrect story and published the right version as explained by the US embassy. We apologise for any inconveniences that may have occurred due to the misrepresentation of the facts in the advisory report.
