South Africa’s upcoming election on May 29, has thrust tech companies under the spotlight for refusing to share details on how they plan to prevent the use of social media to incite the public.

That and fears over fake news are a concern among some stakeholders who argue that freely available platforms such as TikTok, Facebook and X are being called to account.
