Police in Arusha have released on bail Tundu Lissu, the national vice chairman of Tanzania's main opposition party, Chadema.

Shortly after his release on Sunday evening, Mr Lissu said he had been ordered to report to police headquarters in Arusha at 9am tomorrow (September 11) to record a statement.

Mr Lissu was arrested in Arusha City on Sunday (September 10) for holding a rally without a permit and preventing police officers from doing their job.

Mr Lissu was arrested along with his bodyguard and three other party leaders, hours before a political rally in Karatu district.

The former Singida North MP was due to hold a rally at Mazingira Bora grounds in the region.

Arusha regional police commander Justine Masejo said Lissu and three other leaders were being interrogated by the police in Arusha.

Chadema's Arusha regional chairperson, Elisa Mungure, confirmed Lissu's arrest along with his bodyguards and other leaders.
