Infrastructure: Construction of Ubungo Interchange complete by 25 per cent

What you need to know:

  • According to Tanroads the project is now at 25 per cent and completion has been set for December 2020.

Dar es Salaam. Construction of the Ubungo Interchange has reached 25 per cent of construction and is expected to be completed by December 2020, the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee was told today by Tanzania Roads Agency (Tanroads).

The parliamentary committee had made a tour of the construction site to evaluate the progress of the mega project that is set to be only the second after the Tazara Flyover  along Mwalimu Nyerere Road which was commissioned in 2018.

Reading the agency’s statement, the project manager Barakael Mmari said the interchange is set to have a life span of 100 years just like many other such infrastructures elsewhere across the world.

"We have so far completed 25 per cent of the project  and we have not experienced any casualties at the construction site, instead, ever since the construction started the rate of accidents have reduced at the Ubugo junction," said Mmari.

The construction of the  266 meter interchange  is being undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Cooperation (CCECC) who have been paid Sh 65.65 billion out of the Sh200.73 billion which is the total cost of the project.
