Tanzania’s Mwakinyo ranked 15th in world professional boxing position
Dar es Salaam. After winning through a technical knockout (TKO) in the second round against Joseph Sinkala in October, Tanzania’s professional boxer Hassan Mwakinyo has climbed two positions and is now ranked 15th in world ranking.
Mwakinyo, who had dropped to 17th position, is now the holder of the Universal Boxing Organisation (UBO) and World Boxing League (WBL) Super welterweight title. He is the only boxer found in the top 50 professional boxer among 1,842 ranked with boxrec- – a website dedicated to holding records of professional boxers.
Before the fight, Mwakinyo who also won by knockout (KO) in the first round against Saidi Yazidu in the non-title bout, has so far collected 114 points in the ranking. US boxer Jarrett Hurdist sits at the top with 337 points and is followed by Mexican Jaime Munguia with 323 points and Erislandy Lara of US in the third position with 320 points.
Mwakinyo who gained prominence after victory over England’s Sam Eggington, climbed 158 places to 16th in the super-welterweight category. Tanzania Professional Boxing Regulatory Authority secretary general Yahaya Poli said it was normal for a professional boxer’s position to fluctuate due to technical reasons. Poli said Mwakinyo dropped after one of the boxers among the top 10 to fight and score points which after summation beat Mwakinyo’s position. He said after Mwakinyo won against Sinkala, he scored points that made him to climb two positions.
“We congratulate Mwakinyo for the stage he has reached, but he needs to fight in order to improve his chances in the ranking, we would like to see him fighting and winning titles. He is now under sponsorship of betting firm, SportPesa,” he said.
