Petrol blues: Fuel prices have gone up, says Ewura

What you need to know:

According to the price cap printed on government gazette on Wednesday June 6, the increase in petrol and diesel local pump prices have been caused by increase in the world oil market prices and Bulk Procurement System (BPS) premiums.

Dar es Salam. The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura) has announced cap prices for petroleum products for Tanzania Mainland showing petrol, diesel and Kerosene prices have increased.

According to the price cap printed on government gazette on Wednesday June 6, the increase in petrol and diesel local pump prices have been caused by increase in the world oil market prices and Bulk Procurement System (BPS) premiums.

The increase of prices is applicable effectively today, according to Ewura acting director general Nzinyangwa Mchany.

He said, the retail and wholesale prices for all petroleum products imported through Dar es Salaam port have changed compared to prices that were published on 2nd May 2018.

“For the month of June 2018, retail prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene have increased by Sh55 per litre (equivalent to 2.4 per cent), Sh19 per litre (0.88 per cent), and Sh36 per litre (1.68 per cent), respectively,” he said.

Similarly, compared to the publication of last month, wholesale prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene have increased by Sh54.85 per litre (2.61 per cent), Sh18.83 per litre (0.93per cent) and Sh36.08 per litre (1.78 per cent), respectively.

“The changes in local prices of petroleum products are mainly due to an increase in the world oil market prices as well as increases in BPS premiums, demurrage charges and depreciation of the Tanzanian shilling against the US dollar, the currency used in the procurement of petroleum products,” he said.

A Ewura statement explained that retail and wholesale prices for petrol and diesel imported in the country through Tanga port have also increased compared to prices that were published on May 2 this year.

In June this year, retail prices of petrol and diesel in the northern regions have increased by Sh9 per litre (0.40 per cent) and Sh39 per litre (1.83 per cent).

Ewura advice that due to depletion of kerosene in Tanga region, Petrol station operators in the Northern regions had to source the product from Dar es Salaam.  Therefore, the retail price will be based on the cost of the product received through Dar es Salaam port and bridging cost to Northern regions.
