Vodacom Tanzania launches eSim cards
Dar es Salaam Vodacom Tanzania has on Friday, September 1, launched the eSIM cards on its network.
The eSIM card which operates the same way as the physical ones is printed electronically in devices that support their usage making it eco-friendly. Having multiple eSIMs on a single device for personal and business use is now also possible.
Speaking during the announcement, Vodacom consumer business unit director Linda Riwa said that the introduction of eSIM is in line with the company’s ambitions to keep up with global technological advancements, respond to customers’ needs.
“The increased use of smartphones calls for more advanced technologies and this is why we are today introducing this product. I know for a fact that most of our customers and Tanzanians in general would be questioning why they should shift to an eSIM if the current one offers the same services,” she said.
Ms Riwa added: The answer is simple, with eSIM, you can have multiple mobile numbers in one phone thus allowing customers to switch mobile carriers with ease since it doesn't require you to physically swap out SIM cards. Moreover, since an eSIM is directly embedded into the device's hardware, it makes it less vulnerable to theft or loss and it is a more environmentally friendly option.
Users with smartphones that support eSIM can switch to it by visiting a nearby Vodacom shop for a SIM swap.
“There are two ways to know whether your smartphone supports eSIM or not. The first one is by dialing *#06# where you will see many numbers labeled with IMEI, ICCID, and EID. The EID is the identifier that your mobile phone has e-SIM capability,” concluded Ms. Riwa.
On his part, the company’s enterprise director Mr. Arjun Dhillon, said the eSIM is a brilliant solution not just for vodacom customers but also travelers, businessmen and individuals in the corporate world who are often moving around a lot.
“This is because when traveling abroad, they don’t have to worry about losing their physical cards when they switch mobile carriers as the e-SIM will already be embedded in their phones. The same applies to tourists and other travelers visiting Tanzania. They can easily latch onto our super network because registering an eSIM is fast and easy thus allowing them to stay connected while on the go.”
