Mufindi encouraged to utilize Sao Hill for livestock training

Mufindi. Residents of Mufindi District in the Iringa Region have been urged to utilise the Sao Hill Livestock Farm to learn best practices for dairy cattle farming, as livestock is a key source of employment in the area.
The farm's acting manager, Ms Domitila Kimaryo, on Thursday, February 26, 2025, told The Citizen’s sister newspaper Mwananchi that its role in breeding crossbred cattle is to increase milk production and boost farmers’ incomes.
“The farm focuses on breeding crossbred dairy cattle and quality Boran bulls to promote the Boran lineage. We sell these cattle to small-scale farmers to support milk production and increase their income,” said Ms Kimaryo.
She added that the farm also produces and sells forage seeds and fodder to assist farmers in feeding their livestock.
Ms Kimaryo encouraged farmers to start their farms to ensure sustainable livestock management.
A livestock officer, Mr Yusuph Ndwata noted that the region’s weather conditions pose a challenge, particularly regarding the nutrients in forage.
To address this, he said the farm supplements the animals' diet with additional feed and minerals.
“Another challenge during the rainy season is the significant damage to infrastructure, but we are working on repairs,” said Mr Ndwata.
Despite these issues, he highlighted the farm's successes, including increased cattle production and improved hay yields.
“We’ve increased cattle production from 55 percent to 60 percent, and our forage production has improved from 60 percent to 65 percent this year,” he added.
The farm’s supply officer, Mr Ally Myiomi, also shared the farm’s achievements, noting the successful distribution of affordable livestock and hay bales to farmers nationwide.
Additionally, the farm has been providing training on planting forage, with experts visiting areas to assist with planting and harvesting.
