Seasoned writer Karl Lyimo dies, to be buried in Dar

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has lost one of its foremost writers and social commentators. The veteran wordsmith Karl Israel Lyimo, 82, died in Dar es Salaam last Saturday while undergoing heart treatment.

He is expected to be buried at Kinondoni Cemetery in Dar es Salaam tomorrow. Lyimo’s youngest son, Mr Brendan Lyimo, told The Citizen that his father’s health started to deteriorate last week and he was rushed to hospital. He died while undergoing treatment.

Lyimo was a seasoned columnist with The Citizen, which published his weekly column known as “Your Business is Our Business” in the paper’s BusinessWeek magazine on Thursdays.

Before his demise, he had stated that his body should not be transported to Kilimanjaro Region, where he was born, and should instead be buried at the Kinondoni Cemetery in Dar es Salaam. Lyimo was suffering from diabetes.

“I’m the last of his four children. I will remember my father for his sense of humour and his fortitude. His attitude towards life was that he spoke his mind directly without wavering,” said Mr Brendan Lyimo.
