Dar es Salaam. Young Africans (Yanga) yesterday retained the Azam Federation Cup title after beating Azam FC 1-0 at the Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga.

This is the second title for the Jangwani Street giants this season.

Yanga also won the NBC Premier League title. Yanga also won a silver medal in the CAF Confederation Cup on the away goals rule despite the 2-2 aggregates.

Yanga lost 2-1 at the Benjamin Mkapa and later won 1-0 in Algiers.

Yanga’s goal in yesterday’s match was scored by Kennedy Musonda in the 14th minute after a good pass from Djuma Shabaan.

Yanga, who were without their key players Fiston Mayele and Stephane Aziz Ki, who have joined their respective national football teams, played well in the encounter, which was officiated by referee Ramadhan Kayoko. The team played well in the encounter and created various scoring chances in the thrilling match.

Yanga pocketed Sh50million for winning the title. Azam FC fought hard in the match, creating various clear scoring chances, but their strikers wasted them all.

Yanga’s assistant coach, Cedric Kaze, commended the players for the good results.

“We have the best squad of committed players who have won us two titles this season. We also have the best management and the best technical bench,” said Kaze. Azam FC coach Kally Ongalla said they made mistakes in key areas, which in the end cost them the game.

The competition was revived in the 2015/2016 league season, and Yanga won the title after beating Azam FC 3-1 at the National Stadium, which was recently renamed the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.

Yanga were the first club to double their number of victories in the history of the competition.

Simba Sports Club won in 2016/2017 after beating Mbao FC 2-1 at the Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma.

Simba also won the trophy in 2019/2020 and 2020/2021.

For its part, Azam FC won the championship in the 2018/2019 league season after beating Namungo FC at the Majaliwa Stadium in Lindi Region.
