Speaking to The Citizen at the climax of World Environmental day, Stamico acting Director of Drilling and Engineering Services, Ms Zuena Kongoi, said that preparation for mass production of the environmentally friendly briquettes were going on smoothly at the production centre based at Kabulo –Kiwira coal mine in Songwe region.
Dar es Salaam. The State Mining Corporation (Stamico) this year is set to begin commercial production 2.3 million tonnes of energy saving coal products known as briquettes with a target of reducing 15 per cent charcoal consumption countrywide at the market value of Sh1.15 trillion a year.
Speaking to The Citizen at the climax of World Environmental day, Stamico acting Director of Drilling and Engineering Services, Ms Zuena Kongoi, said that preparation for mass production of the environmentally friendly briquettes were going on smoothly at the production centre based at Kabulo –Kiwira coal mine in Songwe region.
“We have already carried out financial and business analysis to ascertain the viability of mass production of briquettes. Stamico will sell its own products and brands of briquettes at between Sh350 and 500 per kg.,” said Ms Kongoi.
This implies that the higher market value for each tonne of briquettes will be sold at Sh500,000 and for 2.3 million tons the market value jumps to not less Than Sh1.15 trillion. According to her, Stamico is partnering with Tanzania Industrial Research Organisation (Tirdo) to ensure that Stamico briquettes fetch lucrative market prices with environmental standards by incorporating biomass products.
According to A 2017 study by Tirdo, consumption of charcoal in the country destroys between 300,000 and 400,000 hectares of trees a year.
