Dar es Salaam. National Bank of Commerce (NBC) Tanzania has partnered with 25 universities to empowering Tanzanian youths with necessary skills and knowledge to secure jobs or become self-employed.
The youth employability programme dubbed Wajibika is designed to prepare graduates from the Dar es Salaam-based higher learning institutions in the first phase by providing both online and face-to-face training.
Speaking at the occasion to launch the Wajibika Programme on Friday, the deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Labour, Youth and Employment, Mr Anthony Mavunde said that in October this year President John Pombe Magufuli was set to get reports from all Regional Commissioners in the country on the performance of his directive on allocation of plots for youth employment.
According to Mr Mavunde, the head of state will evaluate performance of such directive in order to make sure that it is successfully implemented.
“The government is strongly committed to create more jobs for youth in the form of apprenticeship programme for university graduates and mobilizing thousands of them for self-employment and job creation,” said Mr Mavunde.
He said the youths, especially young graduates from universities and higher learning institutions should get prepared psychologically on how to engage in self-employment and creating jobs for others through entrepreneurship development.
“Many people have been thinking that lucrative incomes are derived from white collar jobs, but experience and various studies have shown the people engage in self-employed ventures such selling fried potatoes popularly known as chips can earn more money than people employed in the formal sector,” said the Deputy Minister.
The board member of NBC Dr Kassim Husein said that Wajibika Programme which is available through a special website for university students and graduates to learn skills for job reaction and acquiring jobs has been approved by Tanzania Commission of Universities (TCU).
“We are very pleased to receive endorsement of Wajibika programme by TCU. We have already introduced the programme to 25 universities and colleges based in Dar es Salaam. We expect 4,000 students are going to benefit from the programme in 2016/17 financial year,” sai Dr Hussein.
Students will be required to register for the programme free of charge, through a link available in the NBC website, he said.
According to NBC statement to the media, Wajibika will also be delivered through face to face coaching facilitated by NBC employees volunteering through scheduled timetable which will be agreed with the selected universities and colleges
