Moshi. In an effort to promote environmental conservation and encourage the use of clean cooking energy, Oryx Gas Tanzania Ltd. and the Special Seats Member of Parliament for Kilimanjaro Region, Ms Shally Raymond, have distributed 1,000 cooking gas cylinders for free.

The cylinders, along with their stoves, have been distributed to leaders of various religious denominations and entrepreneurs in the region.

During the distribution exercise here yesterday, the deputy Minister for Energy, Ms Judith Kapinga, emphasised the crucial role of religious leaders in promoting the use of clean cooking energy within communities. She highlighted their influence and urged them to advocate for clean energy usage while discouraging the use of firewood and charcoal, which contribute to environmental degradation.

“We have great hope in religious leaders, as they can help us educate and inform the public about environmental conservation,” said Ms Kapinga, stressing the importance of their role in shaping societal attitudes towards energy consumption.

Furthermore, she underscored the significant impact of deforestation on climate patterns, noting that even regions traditionally experiencing heavy rainfall are affected due to environmental degradation.

The initiative also aims to empower women, who primarily handle cooking duties, by providing them with cleaner and safer cooking alternatives. “In 2024, let us not accept cooking with firewood or charcoal. We are very grateful to Oryx for providing us with gas stoves,” she added.

The sales manager of Oryx Gas Tanzania Ltd, Mr Shaban Fundi, emphasised the company’s commitment to uplifting communities by providing clean cooking energy solutions. He highlighted the health benefits of using gas stoves and the positive impact on children’s education, as they no longer need to collect firewood.

Oryx Gas Tanzania Ltd. has so far distributed 19,000 free gas cylinders valued at over Sh1.5 billion as part of its ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability and clean energy adoption.
