Prateek Suri, Africa’s richest Indian billionaire

What you need to know:

  • Suri credits his time in Africa for shaping his business vision.

Lagos. Billionaire entrepreneur Prateek Suri, Africa’s richest Indian billionaire, has pledged a significant portion of his wealth to philanthropy through a newly established foundation.

His commitment, one of the largest individual donations in history, will focus on education, healthcare, and child development across Africa, funding schools, teacher training programs, and medical initiatives in underserved communities.

"This is not just charity—it’s a legacy," Suri stated. "Wealth shines brightest when used to illuminate the path for others."

A billionaire’s rise to influence

Born in Delhi, India, Suri’s journey began with humble beginnings. He attended Modern School, Barakhamba Road, before earning a degree in mechanical engineering from BITS Pilani, Dubai.

His entrepreneurial breakthrough came in 2012 when he founded Maser Group, focusing on affordable consumer electronics tailored for the African market. His flagship product, a smart television, became a massive success, selling over 800,000 units across the continent.

Maser Group’s $5 billion acquisition of SCG Asia recently propelled Suri’s net worth to $1.4 billion, securing his place at the top of Africa’s rich list. He also leads MDR Investments, a venture capital firm specializing in mining, infrastructure, shipping, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Empowering Africa through innovation and philanthropy

Suri credits his time in Africa for shaping his business vision.

"It was during my time here that I recognized the vast potential within this diverse market," he said. "That exposure inspired my future ventures."

Now, he’s channeling his success into philanthropy, pledging long-term support for Africa’s economic and social development.

"I know what it feels like to struggle to find your place in the world," he shared. "But with determination and hard work, anything is possible. I want to use my platform to inspire and empower others."

A legacy in the making

Suri’s contributions to Africa’s economic landscape have not gone unnoticed. He was recently honored as Investment Leader of the Year at the Gulf Business Awards 2024 and has drawn comparisons to Aliko Dangote for his impact.

With his business empire expanding and a strong commitment to social progress, Suri is poised to be a pivotal figure in shaping Africa’s future—both as a billionaire and a philanthropist.
