Tanzania sees surge in cargo declaration as maritime trade grows
The number of cargo that was declared at ports in Tanzania increased from 6,000 in 2019/20 to 10,000 in 2021/22, according to the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (Tasac).
The Acting Director General of Tasac, Nelson Mlali, attributed the increase to various initiatives undertaken by the agency, including the establishment of an open registry of ships and the rehabilitation of shipbuilding areas in the Coastal Zone.
Mlali also highlighted the agency's achievements in increasing its revenues from Sh9.1 billion in 2018 to Sh43.4 billion in 2021/22.
However, he also noted that the agency faces two main challenges: the rapid technological change in the sector and the shortage of local experts in some professions, especially inspectors of the safety of water transport.
Mlali said that Tasac is addressing these challenges by developing IT systems and collaborating with various colleges and institutions that provide sea transport training.
The increase in vessel traffic is a positive sign for Tanzania's growing economy and maritime trade. It is expected to further boost economic growth and create new opportunities in the shipping and water transport sector.
Tanzania is strategically located along the East African coast, making it a key gateway for trade between Africa and the rest of the world.
The country has been investing heavily in its maritime infrastructure in recent years, including the construction of new ports and the expansion of existing ones.
