Research and national statistics show that the informal sector remains the backbone of job creation in this country
Bukoba. The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) in Kagera Region has launched a special desk aimed at supporting businesses and entrepreneurs by providing recognition, guidance and economic empowerment within a government framework.
Speaking during the launch yesterday at the TRA offices in Bukoba, Kagera Regional Commissioner Ms Fatma Mwassa urged traders to take full advantage of the new desk, describing it as a rare opportunity that could bring significant commercial benefits to the region.
“There are many medium and large-scale traders who have faced tax challenges, but through this desk those problems will be addressed,” she said.
Ms Mwassa further encouraged business operators to seek professional tax advice in order to avoid setbacks that could stall or collapse their enterprises.
TRA Kagera Regional Manager Castro John said the initiative targets micro, small, medium and large businesses, particularly those previously operating in the informal sector.
“Research and national statistics show that the informal sector remains the backbone of job creation in this country,” he said.
He noted that many small traders still face challenges such as lack of formal registration and limited recognition by government and financial institutions, issues that have necessitated the establishment of the desk.
According to Mr John, the desk will provide free education and advisory services to traders, link them with relevant government agencies and deliver services closer to their business locations.
“We aim to strengthen relations with the private sector by ensuring that we fully engage in supporting and mentoring traders. We have also planned to reach out to women and youth groups involved in business,” he said.
A Bukoba resident and small-scale grain trader, Mr Lucas Kalyamtima, welcomed the move, saying it would make it easier for entrepreneurs like him to access business education and support. “I am happy to see TRA setting up a platform that brings services closer to us," he said.
I will make sure I use it effectively to grow both my business and my income,” he said.
