The mindset you will need to combat regulatory hurdles in 2025
What you need to know:
- When you streamline processes, you unlock the potential for innovation. By automating routine tasks, conducting regular audits, and adopting efficient systems, you can reduce errors, save time, and maintain growth without getting bogged down.
When I embarked on my freelance journey in Tanzania, I was extremely unprepared for the regulatory landscape. Navigating the tax system and project regulations for the first time was daunting; each step forward seemed to lead to two steps back. The process was fraught with delays, ambiguous requirements, and an overwhelming amount of paperwork, all of which threatened to impede my progress.
The journey was far from easy, but it underscored the importance of adaptability. Today I want this article to serve as your reminder to stay resilient and resourceful, no matter how challenging the journey may seem. The road to success in our business environment may not always be straightforward, but it’s navigable with the right mindset and strategies. Let this article be your guide and encouragement to face the hurdles head-on.
Here is how:
- Embrace continuous learning: The world is constantly evolving, and you can’t afford to stand still. Unlike my freelancing experience in America, where procedures, though lengthy, were straightforward and highly digitised, allowing me to complete tasks from the comfort of my home without encountering system outages, our system presented a very different set of challenges. Navigating it requires a proactive approach, patience, and adaptability. Every bit of knowledge you gain empowers you to move forward with confidence. Stay updated on tax reforms, industry regulations, and policy changes by subscribing to government bulletins, joining local business forums, and regularly visiting sites like the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) portal or the Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA) website. These resources can keep you informed about new developments and help you stay compliant.
- Leverage the power of connections: I quickly learnt that ‘knowing someone who knows someone’ can significantly ease the process. So I began cultivating relationships with industry peers and government officials, which gradually led to a clearer path forward. These same individuals also helped me make sense of some of the jargon I encountered on some of the forms that I did not understand and smooth over certain procedural hiccups along the way. Overall, I learnt that relationships can open doors and provide valuable guidance. People are your greatest resource. Build bridges, not walls.
- Streamline internal processes: Systems and structure aren’t just about efficiency; they’re about creating freedom. When you streamline processes, you unlock the potential for innovation. By automating routine tasks, conducting regular audits, and adopting efficient systems, you can reduce errors, save time, and maintain growth without getting bogged down. For example, using tools like QuickBooks or Xero to handle tax filings and financial reporting can minimise human error and free up time for strategic thinking. Scheduling monthly audits of employee records or production standards helps you catch issues early, preventing costly mistakes down the road. Implementing project management tools like Trello or Asana can improve workflow, keeping your team focused and aligned. When you focus on optimising these systems, you create the space needed for your business to thrive and evolve.
- Stay solution-oriented: Sometimes things don’t quite go as planned but remember challenges can be the pathway to your next level. Every obstacle is an invitation to grow. Resolve to stay committed to the vision, remain patient and view challenges as opportunities for growth (and dare I say, personal development).
By embracing this mindset, you’ll build a business that’s not only resilient to regulatory shifts but also primed to excel in a constantly changing economy.
