You think women can’t weld? Think again
What you need to know:
But wait a minute, who said that women aren’t cut for welding? That is a sexist statement and I am going to offend equally by saying that some men in the welding workshop aren’t cut for that business too. There is this amazing group of women in Dar es Salaam who are part of the Wonder Workshop.
Today we are taking you back to a history class. I remember one thing my history teacher mentioned some years back.
She told us that women need not to be underestimated because during World War II, they took up jobs that were traditionally done by men. During that time, certain jobs were a preserve of men.
You will see as you read on why I have a vivid memory of this particular lesson from secondary school.
I am going to tell you about women and metals. We are taking you through that process of joining together metals and flattening them by hammering or compressing. High heat is usually used to make metals reach their melting point.
Yes we are talking about heavy metals and women this time round and not well-manicured fingernails with fresh red nail polish.
The whole point of this article is that women too can weld and they do it well. However, when it comes to numbers, the welding field is still a male-dominated workshop. I know that even in this 21st Century, there are still a lot of negative attitudes about women in skilled business.

These women not only weld but also use recycled items to sustain themselves. They are actually combating the inherent societal biases about women head on.
While growing up, a girl child is often told not to lift certain objects since it will make them become muscular and turn into tomboys.
So we grow up trying to fit expectations of some men who are afraid that we might overtake them in all spheres of life.
A 2014 study in Psychology of Women Quarterly indicated that we do better when playing up our masculine skills. So for all the young women who want to take up welding business, just be confident without caring what the world says. Do not listen to those who tell you that certain jobs are not “ladylike.’’
Nothing should bar you since your skills and hard work will earn you lots of cash and respect. Costumers too would get value for their money since women tend to be more honest in business.
