Azam TV takes over Ugandan league

Azam TV was unveiled as the league sponsors for the next years at a special press conference held yesterday morning at the Nile Hall, Serena in Kampala.

Kampala. The long wait is over; Tanzanian based Pay TV Azam Television has taken over the Uganda Premier League (UPL) naming rights.
Azam TV was unveiled as the league sponsors for the next years at a special press conference held yesterday morning at the Nile Hall, Serena in Kampala.
The company chief executive officer (CEO), Rhys Torrington hailed the cooperation of the federation, football clubs and all the parties that have been fundamental in the helping Azam TV take over the league sponsorship.
“This is an important day in the history of Uganda’s football. We are committed to supporting football development in this Country. We are here to stay,” Torrington said.
Torrington handed over dummy cheque of $ 1.9M (Ush5.4 billion) to the FUFA president, Moses Magogo for the all the 16 Uganda Premier League clubs.
Doors Open to Other Football leagues:
Torrington said that Azam TV was ready to sponsor the other football brands of Uganda – the Uganda Cup and the FUFA Big League.
For his part, Magogo announced the immediate termination of the relationship with Uganda Super League Limited, the body that was previously running the league.
“Our relationship with USLL takes immediate termination. This is a bold step in Uganda’s football. “I thank Azam TV for the sponsorship and urge all the clubs and other stake holders to co-operate.
League football remains an important aspect of football. The 16 clubs are the apex of Uganda’s football,” said Magogo.
In his address, Uganda Premier League chairman, Hajji Abasi Kawaasi commended the new league sponsors with a philosophical statement – ‘A bird in Hand, is worth two in the air…’
