Geita. Geita Gold Mine Limited (GGML) said yesterday that the construction of a 30,000-tonne rice warehouse is nearing completion, and over 3,000 farmers will directly benefit from it.

The miner invested Sh330 million into the project, which is located 15km from the Geita mine site, the company said in a statement yesterday. It has also acquired a tractor for use at the facility.

The warehouse, near Saragulwa Village, will provide an invaluable storage facility for local farmers, a development that will also enable them have time to sell their crops when prices improve.

“We appreciate the GGM support…. We are now very sure to have good space for storing our produce,” said Saragulwa Village chairman Yuda Ng’hindi, who is also a Nyabusakama Co-operative Society member. Exact Line Engineering Company, a local company, is putting finishing touches on the warehouse.

It is scheduled to be handed over by September 15, 2017. “We are on track to complete this work on schedule,” said the company’s CEO Athuman Chande.

GGML has a comprehensive programme of direct investment in the local Geita community through a series of projects including water supply, education and economic development activities in the agriculture, construction and service sectors. Since starting production almost two decades ago, the company has been a source of significant benefit to all stakeholders, yielding more than Sh2.3 trillion (about $1.1billion) in monetary benefit to the Tanzanian government from taxes collected and paid.

Significant sums have also been paid over that time to suppliers, contractors, and employees involved in the ongoing operations at the mine.

“We aim to leave a legacy of enduring value for our Geita and Tanzania stakeholders through our direct investments, through the jobs we create, through the export revenue we generate and through the taxes we pay,” said GGML managing director Richard Jordinson. “We are proud of this contribution and will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure sustained economic development benefit continues to flow from our mining activities.”
