Halotel wants your mobile money business. Here's what that means...

Halotel has introduced a special campaign to boost subscriptions into its HaloPesa service as telecommunication firms shift their attention to mobile money to improve their balance sheets.
Known as Ninogeshe na HaloPesa, the promotion will see subscribers sending money for free between HaloPesa accounts within the Halotel network.
Latest figures by Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) show that the country’s six mobile money players jointly added 1,541,097 new subscribers between April and June 2018.
The number of mobile money subscribers rose to 20,855,164 in June from 19,314,067 in March.
Halotel’s HaloPesa gained 146,562 new subscribers during the three months, which closed in June with 756,332 clients.
The aim of 'Ninogeshe na HaloPesa' according to the firm’s deputy managing director, Mr Nguyen Van Son, was to make sure that people across all income categories were able to make use of the Halotels’ mobile money platform.
Apart from sending and receiving money for free within the HaloPesa network, the firm was also reducing charges associated with sending money from HaloPesa to other networks.
“We believe the service will help our subscribers, scattered across urban and rural settings, to save part of the money that they would otherwise spend on sending and receiving money and spend the saved cash on other important needs,” said Mr Nguyen Van Son.
He said the promotion will also see subscribers winning free airtime whenever they deposit their money in their HaloPesa wallets to an agent.
At the same time, Halotel has struck an agreement with artiste Faustina Charles (Nandi) in which the latter will be HaloPesa’s brand ambassador.
Halotel Tanzania, which is owned by Vietnamese government-controlled Viettel Global, says it chose Nandi to drive forward its brand across Tanzania because of her “ability to entertain.”
“(She’s) widely celebrated. With her latest single, Ninogeshe, her celebrity will present the company in a positive way,” said Halotel spokesperson Mhina Semwenda.
The HaloPesa service has over 1.5 million local subscribers, with over 55,000 agent across Tanzania.
