CRDB’s Kimei shortlisted for African Banker Awards race

Dr Kimei, has been shortlisted in the awards’ ‘African Banker of the year’ category alongside his three counterparts from Nigeria and one from Mozambique
Dar es Salaam. The CRDB Bank managing director, Dr Charles Kimei, is among five top bankers that are competing for honours at the 2013 African Banker Awards.
Dr Kimei, has been shortlisted in the awards’ ‘African Banker of the year’ category alongside his three counterparts from Nigeria and one from Mozambique.
The Mozambican is Mr Joao Figueiredo, the chief executive officer (CEO) and Chairman for Unico Bank while those from Nigeria include Mr Segun Agbaje, the CEO and managing director for GTB Bank; Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, CEO for Access Bank Nigeria and Mr Andrew Alli, President and CEO for Africa Finance Corporation in Nigeria. Winners in the Banking Awards are judged for their performance for the fiscal year 2012.
All winners will be announced at the African Banker Awards 2013 Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony, slated for May 29, 2013 at Taj Palace Marrakech, Morocco.
Last year, CRDB’s profit after tax surged by 112 per cent to Sh80.54 billion compared to Sh37.71 billion generated in 2011.
A statement released by the bank in Dar es Salaam yesterday had it that Dr Kimei happens to be the first Tanzanian to feature on the award’s shortlist since the initiation of the event ten years ago. Bank CEOs from Nigeria and South Africa have always been ranked highly in such awards during all the past years.

Dr Kimei holds a PhD in Economics. He has been in the financial services sector for over 30 years having once worked as director for policy and research with the Bank of Tanzania. He became managing director for CRDB Bank in 1998. During the past 15 years, he has managed to transform CRDB from a loss-making entity into a profit-making outfit and in fact, Tanzania’s largest bank in terms of assets and profitability.
