Dar es Salaam. Air Tanzania has announced that it will launch direct flights to Bunjumbura in November as part of the national carrier’s efforts to re-position itself in the competitive aviation industry.

Airline’s acting managing director and CEO Milton Lazaro, said in a statement yesterday that flights to Bujumbura will commence on November 6, this year and that they will be scheduled for Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Currently, the national airline runs a single 50-seat aircraft, Bombardier Dash 8Q-300 that flies to Kigoma, Tabora, Mtwara and Hahaya in the Comoros.

However, sources from within the company confirmed to The Citizen that the airline is expecting to receive a second similar aircraft next week.

“The company plans to receive a leased jet by the end of next week. It is this leased plane that will enable us to fly to Bujumbura and increase frequencies domestically,” said the source who preferred anonymity because she is not the company’s spokesperson.

When contacted for comment Mr Lazaro confirmed the matter and directed The Citizen to obtain more information from the airline’s commercial director, Juma Boma.

However, when contacted for further information, Mr Boma said he had visitors and he would do so at a later time, but by the time of going to press he had not.

The airline also plans to increase the number of flights to Mbeya to four times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. “Tabora will enjoy more flights for a total of four times a week,” said Mr Lazaro.

He said there would also be daily flights to Kigoma.
